1. Stay Organized.

I always suggest that my clients keep sorting their receipts through the year. If you do, all you need to do at tax time is pull out your records. If you use the old shoebox method, you’ll need to take time before you begin tackling your tax return to sort out your records. The IRS wants to help you and has a publication number 552, "Recordkeeping for Individuals."

2. Get Your Forms.

Make sure you have all the necessary forms before you start your taxes. You’ll find forms at most Post Offices and public libraries, at IRS offices and online at www.irs.gov. The IRS will also fax tax forms. For this service, call 703-368-9694 using the phone attached to your fax machine.

3. Get Help!

Believe it or not, the IRS has trained volunteers offering in-person assistance at no cost. To find out where to find this service near you, call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040. They also have pre-recorded information at 1-800-829-4477. And, of course, you can always ask your tax professional to take care of it for you.

4. Proof Your Work.

Before you send in your tax form, make sure you have entered all the figures correctly and double check your math. One transposed number and cause all sorts of havoc. Also make sure you attach the necessary schedules in the proper order and keep a copy of the return for your files.

5. File Electronically.

If you want your refund fast, file electronically. In many cases, you can receive your refund in about 14 days rather than the standard six to eight weeks via mail.
